Thoughts and Prayers Are Not Enough
For some, it is easy to ignore mental health symptoms in others. However, ignoring those struggling could lead to even bigger problems. The easiest way to prevent school shootings is to check on those who struggle with mental health issues. Research the illness, become educated on the subject matter, and support them on their good days and bad. Any actions taken help those struggling with mental health issues. Show them compassion and let them know they are not alone.
Early detection and intervention needs to happen. And schools should be able to identify these problems.

Recognizing Mental Health Issues
If they are restless, extremely drowsy, forgetting things easily when that is unusual for them, or taking large amount of sick days, they may be struggling with depression and anxiety. These are all common signs of these mental illnesses and should not be taken lightly. If you notice someone is experiencing these symptoms, check up on them.
Teachers are trained to watch the language their students are using and what words to use with them. In addition, they are taught what to do in hard situations and what signs to look for in students that indicate they may be struggling with mental illness. They should be asking "how can I help?" rather than "what did you do to make you feel like this?" This makes the students feel less judged and encourages them to reach out to others.

Our Call to Action
Like many of the parents of victims and witnesses to school shootings, we are giving a call to action. More money needs to be allocated to school shooting prevention, training, and equipment in the classroom. There must also be a clear definition and federal punishment to the act of terrorism within our country. Schools need to work towards safety certification, this must be mandated on a national level.
